I cannot download iPod Software?

Everytime a new software update for iPods comes out i cannot download and install the update. The download gets halfway then claims it has timed out. I have run network diagnostics in iTunes on my computer and it says everything is ok, but yet i still can't download the updates. To update my software i have to use other peoples computers and this is just a huge inconvenience. I have tried using my laptop and that doesn't work either. I can't restore my iPod because it wants to download software to let me do that and i can't download anything. I can download music (not from iTunes) and other things just fine, but not the software. Any help would b greatly appreciated. I have a 1st Gen iPod Touch btw.
