How to wire an electric motor and switch?

I am totally new to wiring and I want to connect a switch, battery, and motor so that you flip the switch and the motor turns on. I tried it and the toggle switch has three little prongs sticking out the back for wiring so I wired up two that were sitting next to each other, leaving one on the end open. then I soldered another pair of wires on top of that to connect to the 9 volt battery, still leaving the end one untouched. I turned the switch and it worked. but the i turned the switch off, left it for a minute , then turned it back on to find that the battery was really hot and it wasn't working. what did I do wrong?
