What's the best way to get rid of skunks or to fend them off?

They are everywhere in Southern California. They're mutiplying in the urban cities. They don't seem to have any natural enemies. The only times they got killed are when they get crushed crossing the streets. Human & animals are all afraid of them or even to get near them.
